General Practice Liaison Unit (GPLU)

The GPLU is responsible for strengthening communication and collaboration between Gold Coast Health, Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) and General Practice. Our unit works to improve patient care through improved clinical communications, innovation and healthcare integration.  

The unit is jointly funded by Gold Coast Health and the GCPHN with offices at Gold Coast University Hospital. 


Our objectives

  • To enhance patient journeys by coordinating and improving the communication between primary and secondary care clinicians and settings.  
  • To Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of health services.  
  • To engage and support clinicians and staff to implement improvement initiatives or adapt existing models of care.  
  • To improve the quality of referrals to the Specialist Outpatient Services and embed the Queensland Clinical Prioritisation Criteria.  
  • To support clinical handover from secondary to primary care by improving the timeliness and quality of patient discharge and specialist outpatient clinic correspondence.  
  • Design, deliver and contribute to educational events for clinicians.  
  • Support primary care clinicians with specific queries relating to their patients or HHS systems and procedures.  
  • Provide advice and support to a wide range of healthcare providers and services in relation to the quality of their care, redesign projects and engagement of clinicians.  


The GPLU team work under the GP Liaison Officer (GPLO) Dr Carl de Wet and Program Manager Karen Whitting.

Associate Professor Carl de Wet - General Practice Liaison Officer
Dr de Wet executes the role of GPLO by working in partnership within the broad context of health care services in the Gold Coast, and provides clinical support and advice. His role includes, but is not limited to:  
  • One of the important interfaces between different clinicians and settings in the Gold Coast region.  
  • Providing expert advice relating to quality improvement and clinical-related systems and procedures. 
  • Developing innovative solutions to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of care.  
Carl graduated in 2000 and gained clinical experience in a wide range of settings and specialties in South Africa and the UK before qualifying as a General Practitioner. Since completing a Higher Academic Fellowship with NHS Education for Scotland, Carl has led or contributed to a wide range of research projects and improvement initiatives, presented at national and international conferences, published in peer reviewed journals and co-authored ‘Safety and Quality in Primary Care, the essential guide’. Carl still practices as a GP and is the GP Liaison Officer in the Gold Coast region, a Clinical Lead for the Healthcare Improvement Unit (Queensland) and a member of the Queensland Clinical Senate.
