Cancer Screening and Checks

Based on AIHW data from 2015-16, the latest national program screening participation rates for the Gold Coast are:

  • Bowel (50-74 yrs) 38.5%
  • Breast (50-74 yrs) 54.3%
  • Cervical (20-39 yrs) 54.2%
The GCPHN aims to support general practices and the community to increase the screening rate averages for bowel, breast and cervical cancer screening within the Gold Coast region by:

  • Enhancing accuracy in practice data regarding screening
  • Identifying, promoting and aligning screening with HHS and National priorities and campaigns
  • Identifying general practices in areas of lower screening rates to develop strategies to better embed a screening infrastructure in the practice setting
  • Collaborating with GCPHU, Private Health Insurers, National Screening providers and General Practice data extraction tool companies to obtain data and information for the purpose of increasing screening rates
  • Supporting the implementation of education/ media strategies that creates a greater awareness of bowel, breast and cervical cancer and promotes screening
  • Updating and reviewing resources on the relevant HealthyGC webpages, linking to national sources and advocating in collaboration with partners to improve data compatibility with general practice
