Are you a counsellor, clinician or GP working with people who:
- Have a problematic substance use
- Have a mental health condition
- Or have a problem with both?
If so, it is likely there will be underlying issues with problem gambling. To support clinicians to better detect and help their clients with risky gambling behaviours, Gold Coast Primary Health Network, in partnership with Lives Lived Well, is offering a free gambling screening workshop.
Why screen for problem gambling?
Research shows that of those who have a gambling problem:
- 58% of them will also have a problem with drinking or drugs
- 38% will have a mental health condition
In addition, of those undergoing substance use treatment, 20-30% will have gambling problems. Individuals need support for each problem if they are to make a full recovery and prevent relapse.
Given these statistics, it is possible that your patients with AOD or mental health concerns are also dealing with an underlying issue of problem gambling.
Lives Lived Well is offering free training which can be done as a short course online or a facilitator can be invited to deliver a 90-minute workshop in your workplace or tailor the course to suit your needs.
What does the training involve?
- characteristics of problem gambling
- the relationship with substance use and mental health
- how to use the Problem Gambling Severity Index
- the use of brief interventions
- and practice-based strategies for referral to specialist services.
There is little in the way of screening for problem gambling in health and community settings despite these high levels of comorbidity. To address the impact of problem gambling on the community, it is important for clinicians to start screening and to have the tools and approaches to do so.
