Queensland Youth Cancer Service

The Queensland Youth Cancer Service (QYCS) was established in 2013 to facilitate improvements in the treatment and support for adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer and their families and carers.

QYCS is a statewide network that is part-funded by the Commonwealth Government through the National Youth Cancer Network Program (NYCNP), which was established in 2009. The NYCNP comprises the QYCS and Youth Cancer Services (YCS) in four other jurisdictions: Victoria/Tasmania, South Australia/Northern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory. It is coordinated nationally through CanTeen Australia, via https://www.canteen.org.au.

The Gold Coast University Hospital and The Townsville Hospital complete the current statewide service model. These two hospital are both supported by a specialist clinical nurse consultant, a clinical nurse and senior medical officer. Age-appropriate treatment and psychosocial support is provided through secondary consultation with the central QYCS team at regular multidisciplinary team meetings via videoconferencing. The central team also supports a part-time youth cancer clinical nurse consultant based at the Mater Private Hospital, South Brisbane.
