Headway ABI Australia

Established in 1986, Headway Gold Coast Inc. now Headway ABI Australia, is a not for profit, community based organisation offering support to people with an Acquired Brain Injury, their carers, family and friends. Headway offers flexible and individual support to people, aged 18 to 65 between Beenleigh and Coolangatta.

Headway Gold Coast Inc. was originally formed by a small group of families with members with ABI,  who saw a need to provide specific support for people with an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI). The service was incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act 1981 in July 1986 as Headway Gold Coast Regional Group Inc., which remained in force until the change to its present name in October 1993.

The service currently operates from a large residential building on acreage with private properties adjoining, and is located a short distance from the nearest hospital emergency department. Although not a purpose-built facility, a range of facilities have been established including recreation and craft rooms, a computer room with several terminals and a gymnasium. Outside facilities include a swimming pool, tennis court and a large garden area, which supports a horticulture program and other outdoor activities. Successful funding applications have resulted in the service having one transitional house for three persons and a house for two long term residents.

Headway Services an area from Coolangatta to Beenleigh, with members and service users coming from Brisbane and Gold Coast Hospitals, other services, family, friends and self referrals. Their service is restricted in that they are only to provide adequate services and support to service users who have compensation insurance, or have been approved limited individual funding through Disability Services Queensland. This leaves a significant number of people with an ABI without the necessary support services they require while they await government funding, which generally requires a wait of up to a minimum of two years.

Service users have injuries ranging from minor to severe and are aged between 18 and 65 years.

People who have serious disabilities following an acquired brain injury, require long term rehabilitation, both physical and neurological, to enable them to return to their community and/or family. Sadly these people are discharged from hospital without having been given the opportunity to receive the ongoing support and rehabilitation they require, the result being long term deteriorating disability, and family breakdown.

Headway strives to provide support not only to their service users but also to family, friends and the community. Headway also undertakes fundraising activities in the community to acquire the funds necessary to provide many service users with supports which they would otherwise be unable to access. Headway provides opportunities for our service user group through a range of services developed to meet their special needs.
