MumSpace

MumSpace, launched by the Federal Government, is Australia’s new one-stop website supporting the mental health and emotional wellbeing of pregnant women, new mums and their families.

MumSpace is designed to connect you quickly with the level of support you need, from advice and support in the transition to parenthood, to effective online treatment programs for perinatal depression and anxiety. The resources on MumSpace will help you ‘step-up’ to whichever level of support suits you best. MumSpace is also a resource for your healthcare professional.

MumSpace is brought to you by the Perinatal Depression e-Consortium (PDeC), led by the Parent-Infant Research Institute (PIRI) in partnership with Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia (PANDA), Jean Hailes Research Unit at Monash University, Jean Hailes for Women’s Health and Queensland University of Technology.

Key resources include the newly launched online perinatal depression treatment, MumMoodBooster, now available publicly for the first time, and a new mobile app MindMum, offering emotional support for mothers.

How does it work?
MumSpace uses a stepped-care approach to connect expectant and new mums quickly with the level of care they need, from support in the transition to parenthood, to effective online treatment programs for perinatal depression and anxiety.  MumSpace helps users to decide which of these supports they need, and to step up or step down at their own pace. There is also information on the causes of depression and help to recognise symptoms.

How can health professionals use MumSpace?
MumSpace features three levels of resources to which you can direct your clients:

  • For All New Parents – expert advice, skills and tips to adjust to life with a new baby, blog, information and online programs
  • When You Need a Little Extra Help – MindMum, a new app provides mums and mums to be with problem solving and coping skills
  • Online Treatments – depressed or anxious mums or mums to be identified through screening or assessment can be offered MumMoodBooster, an e-treatment complemented by SMS support
The MumMoodBooster (postnatal) and Mum2BMoodBooster (antenatal) programs are personalized, interactive online treatments that can be an adjunct to your management by providing evidence-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Time permitting, you may wish to show new mums how to navigate the treatment programs, and ensure they feel comfortable. You can support online treatment sessions by discussing progress during your scheduled appointments.
