Better Access to Psychiatrists, Psychologists & General Practitioners through the MBS (Better Access) initiative

The Better Access initiative provides better access to mental health practitioners through Medicare.
 
The purpose of the Better Access initiative is to improve treatment and management of mental illness within the community.

The Better Access initiative is increasing community access to mental health professionals and team-based mental health care, with general practitioners encouraged to work more closely and collaboratively with psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, registered psychologists and appropriately trained social workers and occupational therapists.

Part of the Better Access funding has been allocated to education and training for health professionals.

The Better Access initiative is available to patients with an assessed mental disorder who would benefit from a structured approach to the management of their treatment needs.Medicare rebates are available for up to ten individual and ten group allied mental health services per calendar year to patients with an assessed mental disorder who are referred by: A GP managing the patient under a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan or Under a referred psychiatrist assessment and management plan or A psychiatrist or paediatrician.

Suitable for

People with common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, young people under 15 years old, men, people living in rural and remote regions and people living in areas of high socio-economic disadvantage.
